The exhibit dates are February 28 – April 4, 2013.

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 28, 2013, 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Terrell Hall 102, PCC Cascade Campus. Artist Talk: Thursday, February 28, 2013, 6:10 – 7:00 pm, at the Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building (MAHB) room 223, PCC Cascade Campus. Gallery Hours: 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday

Cascade Gallery presents watercolor paintings by Eugene-based artist Laura Ahola-Young. Inspired by fleeting and destructive aspects of our biological world, Ahola-Young reworks her paintings’ surfaces with glazes and scraping in order to reflect history and memory of a structure. Within layers of paint and represented spaces, she reveals fleeting warnings - prodromes – as in early symptoms indicating the attack of a disease. She says, “When painting, I am actively creating while simultaneously destroying. . . . My work reflects my desire for absolutes and claims none.”

Originally from Minnesota, Ahola-Young received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and MFA from San Jose State University. She teaches art at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon.
the awareness of the transience of life and illusory promises of happiness, the
land always offers more, something beyond eternity, beyond hope and beyond
disappointments. In landscapes that are so huge you could lose yourself in
them; becoming an inconsequential speck of dust as part of a larger-than-life
orchestra celebrating the joy of nature. Variety inside repetition; multiples
generate textures; textures morph into forms; forms create depth. This
inter-connectedness mirrors the forces, which shaped the land over time. Its
geological genesis etched the surface as did the ebb and flow of cultural
sediment and weathered erosion.”

ambiguous meanings which complicate understanding. I allow the work to exist in
a state of absurdity by choosing to exclude certain information that is vital
to the interpretation of the images. The work becomes more about questions than
answers and alludes to the fact that, as humans, we can never really find real
truth, only temporary conclusions. That really, there is nothing new under the
