Exposed - Photo Exhibition, Feb. 6-23

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present EXPOSED, an exhibition featuring LCC Media Arts Photography instructors.

This exhibition will feature contemporary work representing all forms of photographic expression. Exhibiting artists include: Ian Coronado, Anne Godfrey, Richard Lennox, Camilla Dussinger, Damian McDonald, Susie Morrill, Michael Phillips, Jeri Mrazek, Jennifer Salzman, Dan Welton, Rick Simms, Jeff Goolsby, and Rick Williams.

The show runs from February 6 to February 23. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, February 9 from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. The reception is free and open to the public. Northwest Stone Invitational Reception

The Northwest Stone Invitational Reception will be held on Thursday, January 26, 5:30-7 p.m. in the Building 10 gallery.

The Northwest Stone Invitational is curated by sculpture instructor Lee Imonen and is on exhibit now through March 15 in the new gallery space in Building 10 and in the gallery in Building 11. Yoruba African Art Exhibition - Opens January 9

The Lane Community College Art Gallery presents the Yoruba African Art Exhibition.

This exhibition features pieces from the private collection of Mary Johnston, Florence, OR. The exhibition will contain works from the Yoruba Tribe of South Nigeria. The pieces give a historical overview of ceremonies, customs and beliefs that are relevant to the Yoruba people.

The show runs from January 9 to February 2.

The Workmanship of Risk - Dan Schmitt, Ken Herrin - Nov. 14 - Dec. 1

“The Workmanship of Risk”, a two-person show featuring area artists Dan Schmitt and Ken Herrin is at the LCC Art Gallery, Nov. 14 - Dec. 1. Dan Schmitt teaches Ceramics at Lane Community College. Ken Herrin is a local sculptor who works in mixed media. A lecture featuring Dan Schmitt will be held on Nov. 17 at 4:00pm with a reception immediately following at 5:00.

When asked about his approach to his newest work, Dan stated, “The surfaces on my new work are now more painterly and I draw inspiration from Japanese Oribe ceramics, sumi ink paintings, folk art, and children’s illustration and art. I like the direct, spontaneous, application of graphic color and mark making to complement my forms.”

Ken shared his thoughts on the goal of his work by stating, “Over time, every artist will develop a language of their own making, with both greater structure and phrasing as well as individual words unique to that language. For myself, when I complete a piece, it is as if I have put the binding on a book and it is now “ex libris” and out of the library of my experience and ready for sharing.”

Lane community College Art and Applied Design Department congratulates Lee Imonen on the recent dedication of “BASIN, a public art commission from the Civil Engineering department at the Oregon Institute of Technology. Imonen, who has a master of fine arts from the University of Oregon and a bachelor of arts from Willamette University, teaches sculpture at Lane Community College. The 26’X25’ steel and aluminum sculpture functions as an outdoor classroom as well as a general meeting place and land mark, while adding to the visual dynamics of OIT’s campus.

Jefferson Goolsby - "Sightings" October 24-November 10

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present the exhibition "Sightings" by Jefferson Goolsby, media arts program coordinator and instructor at Lane Community College.

Jefferson Goolsby is an intermedia artist working in moving and still image, sound, performance, and interactive installation exploring themes of geographic and cultural displacement, globalization, and individual reckoning. His work has been presented throughout the United States and internationally including the Maine Center for Contemporary Arts Biennial; International Symposium on Electronic Arts 2008 (Singapore) and 2009 (Belfast); Jordan Schnizter Museum of Art; and the Portland International Experimental Film Festival.

The show runs from October 24th through November 10th. A lecture will take place on Thursday, October 27th, beginning at 3:30 with a reception immediately following. Memories of War, The New Generation, October 24-December 1

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present “Memories of War, The New Generation”, part of the Counterpoint 2011 War + Peace series hosted by the Eugene Symphony.

This exhibition will feature regional artists showcasing work from all mediums. Their works will explore the viewpoints of the new generation of war and peace. The focus of the exhibition will be to exam the history of war and how it contrasts to the new world changes in the post 9/11 era.

Susan Lowdermilk - Book wins award!

Susan Lowdermilk's artist book, A Ritual to Read to Each Other won the first place award at the exhibition Handmade & Bound, Nashville in at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film in Nashville, Tennesee. Handmade & Bound is the College's 1st annual handmade books festival.

Kathleen Caprario, instructor in Lane's Art and Applied Design Department, has a work in the 2011 Mayor's Art Show: Celebrating Lane County Artists, August 25 - October 8 at the Jacobs Gallery. Kathleen's collage and mixed media piece, titled "Lake Dreaming #5" received the 1st Juror's Choice Award by juror Karin Clarke.

Bike Corrals Designed by Lane Students

Eugene area bike riders will be able to experience a little art when they park their bikes at two downtown locations. The City of Eugene partnered with Lane art instructor Lee Imonen and his students over the past year to design and create three artistic bike corrals for downtown. Two of the corrals were dedicated with their first bike locking on Thursday, September 8.

Mayor Kitty Piercy gave an address in front of the Morning Glory Restaurant across from the train station at 450 Willamette Street. A bicycle group then traveled over to the Kiva grocery store at 11th and Olive to dedicate the second piece.

“The work is fabulous and the students deserve a round of applause for their efforts,” says Imonen.

Students in last fall’s Art 117: Three Dimensional Basic Design came up with nine different designs for the downtown bike corrals. The public reviewed and commented on the designs while they were on display in the Atrium and the Eugene Public Library during January and February. A selection committee composed of the City’s Public Art Committee, Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and other stakeholders reviewed public input and determined the winning designs.

The project was funded by the city and in-kind donations including the design work and thousands of hours of labor from Imonen and his students.

Cultural Landscapes Mural Project

The Art on Campus committee announces that Lane Community College will be receiving some color on campus this summer in a big way. A mural designed by artist and Lane instructor, Tom Madison, will be painted on Building 5 by students under the instruction of Mr. Madison. The mural is being executed as an art class, beginning August 15. The design celebrates the diverse cultural landscape of the college, the United States, and the world at large, in an abstract and symbolic way.

The mural was approved through the college's established art review process with funding for materials provided primarily through the President's fund and The Lane Foundation. Paint for the project is being donated by Tommy's Paint Pot of Eugene. Art Department - New Summer Location

The Art and Applied Design Department has moved to new quarters for the summer while it's home in Building 11 is undergoing renovation. The department offices are now in the Music, Dance, and Theatre Department in Building 6. The division coordinator, Mary Jo Kreindel, is now in building 6/133, 8:00 am-4:00pm, 541-463-5411 and the department assistant, Elizabeth Uhlig, is now in building 6/143, 1:00-5:00 pm at 541-463-5409. The offices are open Monday - Thursday. LCC is closed on Fridays during the summer.

Satoko in "Landscapes by Gallery Artists" at White Lotus, June 3 - July 30

White Lotus Gallery is pleased to announce a special open house event for jewelry artists Suzanne Linquist and Christine L. Sundt and ceramicist Hank Murrow. It will be held at the gallery on Friday, June 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will showcase new works by the artists.

Rob Adams, instructor in Art & Applied Design, has a collage piece in the "Equine: A juried group exhibition" at Portlands' Froelick Gallery. The title of Rob's piece is "Horse with Mask". 6th Annual High School Art Show - March 28-April 8

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present our 6th Annual High School Art Show. This show is an invitational to area high schools in Lane County to share with our community, their young and upcoming art students.

Along with the 2-week exhibition students who participate are eligible for awards and scholarships. Karl Brantley and Lincoln Financial of Eugene will be sponsoring this year’s exhibition.

Artist Books and Pop-up, a Sampler -- Susan Lowdermilk Workshop at OCAC

Susan Lowdermilk is presenting a 2-day workshop: Artist Books and Pop-up, a Sampler at the Oregon College of Art and Craft on March 5-6, (Sat, Sun) 9:00 am--4:00 pm.

In this workshop, you will learn a variety of pop-up techniques and folded and stitched book structures. Form, materials and content, and how the three are essentially integrated will be discussed throughout the workshop, as well design, layout and problem solving strategies. Examples of artist books from the instructor’s collection will be presented and discussed. All skill levels are welcome, beginning to advanced. Tuition received on or before 2/16, $230. Tuition received after 2/16, $250. Studio fee $20.

Julie Perini Exhibit - They Have Names for Girls Like Me - Jan. 31 - Feb. 17

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present the exhibition, They Have Names For Girls Like Me, by Portland artist Julie Perini. The exhibition is comprised of experimental video and film stills.

When asked to describe her work, Perini stated: The video explores ideas about cinematic identification, the history of representation of women in cinema, and notions of gender as performance. This piece constantly grows longer and is a different edit each time the work screens.

The show runs from January 31 to February 17th. A lecture will be held on Thursday, February 3rd at 3:00 pm with a reception immediately following from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Gabriella Soraci in "Fresh Air" Exhibit in Idaho

Gabriella Soraci, instructor in 2D Basic Design and Drawing, has a painting in "Fresh Air: A Regional Exhibiton of Emerging Artists" at the Visual Arts Center at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. The exhibition runs from January 28 to February 25; the opening reception is on January 28, 6:00-8:00 pm.

From the Visual Arts Center website: "Fresh Air is an exhibition of contemporary visual art juried by Courtney Gilbert, Curator of Visual Arts at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Emerging artists from Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming were invited to submit artwork for consideration and 36 artworks by 27 artists were selected from nearly 300 entries from throughout the region."

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present 40 Years of Excellence: LCC Art Gallery 40th Anniversary Exhibition. The exhibition will feature the works of past instructors who were part of the 40 years of excellence showcased through out the years at the LCC Art Gallery.

Andy Salzman in Italy

Andy Salzman, sculpture and ceramics instructor at Lane, has work in two exhibits in Italy this fall and winter. Salzman has sculpture in KOSAKAOS: dis harmonies in art (KOSAKAOS: Disharmony in Art), an exhibit at the Fonderia Delle Arti in Rome, November 19 - December 19.

Andy had ceramic work in Keramikos 2010 (Ceramics 2010) at the Artidec Gallery in Bracciano, Italy, September 18-October 17.

In Formation: Anne Godfrey and Rob Adams, Nov. 15 - Dec. 2

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present “In Formation”, a two-person show featuring artists and Lane Community College faculty members, Anne Godfrey and Rob Adams. Anne Godfrey teaches photography and drawing and Rob Adams teaches painting and design within the Department of Art and Applied Design. The exhibition consists of both photography and painting.

When asked about what inspires her photography, Anne stated, “I drift with the camera, creating layered images while walking through both new and familiar places. These images transcend a static pictorial representation of landscape space creating a sense of movement and time, more closely representing my psychological and physical experiences.”

In discussing his approach to his work, Rob stated, “I distill images into simpler fields of color, reflecting the way art, through graphic design, has helped reduce the world into marketable products. The simplification of concepts into shared symbols and icons has always intrigued me. Humor and an appreciation of the absurd are vital to me.”

The show runs from November 15th through December 2nd. A lecture featuring both artists will be held on November 18th at 3:00 pm with a reception immediately following at 4:00.

Eric Fracassi - "Saturdays and Some Days" in Art Gallery

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud present the exhibition, Saturdays and Some Days by Michigan artist, Eric Fracassi. The exhibition is a recent body of work from Eric's ongoing "Recollection Series".

When asked to describe his work, Fracassi stated: This work considers new relationships between the fluidity of a memory and the static images that are created in the final piece. Childhood beliefs are explored through words, characters and images, and ultimately are exposed to new sensibilities.

The Best of LibGuides (part of Springshare which creates web applications for libraries and educational institutions) recognizes quality library guides and shares them as excellent examples for other libraries.

Librarians Claire Dannenbaum and Don Macnaughtan created the Art & Art History Research Guide to help students research topics in art and art history in the LCC Library. Health & Wellness Banners by Tom Madison

Tom Madison, Graphic Design instructor, has designed nine banners for the new Health and Wellness Building. Tom worked with the Dean of Health Professions, the Foundation Director, the President's Office and the architects to conceptualize what would look good as celebratory banners for the grand opening on September 23. The banners will also be used for recruiting and other functions as they list the various professions certified through the Health Professions department. The nine banners measure 3 x 7 feet each. They were created using a process called "dye sublimation," where heat transfers ink printed onto a paper substrate right into the nylon of a fabric banner. They each come with their own stand.

Wild Autumn Magic: Surface Design & Accordion Books Workshop with Andie Thrams, November 6-7, 10:00am - 5:00pm, LCC Building 11, Room 119.

Explore the elusive creative space between care and wild abandon as a way to invite the magic of fall into the making of a book. The workshop will begin by working with pure color to create beautiful shimmering paper surfaces.Wild flora will be used for inspiration and as tools for drawing and painting in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Once dry, our paper will have a surface wonderfully primed for building additional layers of drawing, painting and writing. Directed experiments will dance between the careful and the out of control, using watercolor, ink, gouache, pencil and pastel to develop imagery and content. Finally, all will come together as the work is bound into accordion-folded structures, full of autumn magic. Color mixing understanding is helpful, though not required. All levels welcome, beginning to advanced.

Andie Thrams is a California-based visual artist working in painting andt he book arts. Her lifelong devotion to creative work in wilderness locations,especially within the pages of her field journals, has evolved into the artist’sbooks and paintings now held in prominent private and public collections.

"Interference" and "Pollen Count I" are on exhibit at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, Vermont and runs from July 31 to September 6; and at the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, Vermont and runs from September 18 t0 October 31.

The gallery press release states: "In this new work, Grosowsky returns to his familiar themes of figures and landscapes, but with some significant changes and a fresh perspective. There is a sense of light and a brighter palette ... a softer, more romantic mood. ... The human figures are more varied and there are lots of animals -- cats, dogs, birds. Carrie O'Coyle Woodblock Print in Mayor's Art Show

Carrie O'Coyle (Richenberg)'s wooodblock print, "Fish in the Wave" has been selected for the 2010 Mayor's Art Show. "Fish in the Wave" is a four-color woodblock print. It is a nishiki-e, a Japanese multi-colored woodblock print; this style of printing was invented in the 1760's.

Hefty Increase in Art Students in 2009-2010

Lee Imonen Sculpture "Bountiful" at Delta Ponds

Lee Imonen, sculpture instructor, has just installed his sculpture "Bountiful" next to the new Delta Ponds Pedestrian Bridge in Eugene. He was featured in a recent piece on KEZI-TV, a local Eugene television station. The sculpture refers to a Native American fishing method with poles and a fishing net. Imonen states: "I want the net to look full, like it's just been pulled out of the water. And so it's this bountiful harvest that signifies that return and reinvestment of Eugene to this natural area." The sculpture is part of the city's 2010 Public Art Plan.

"Body Into Clay" - In Memory of Tom Rohr

"Body Into Clay," an article in the current issue of The Studio Potter, was written by Lisa Favero in memory of Tom Rohr, former instructor in ceramics at Lane Community College.

Favero writes about Tom's pots: "To each and drink from them is to enter a terrain of pleasure and exploration, in pursuit, enroute to satisfaction. ... The obvious, fundamental action of Tom's work - the erasure of the boundary between pots and who we are -- he left us to experience ourselves. ... "A master potter because there was no boundary between his palm, his belly, his heart, and the clay, Tom died of a heart attack quickly, with the suddenness of a cup departing when it falls from the hand."

Rob Adams - Collegium, Italy

Rob Adams, instructor of painting, drawing and design, attended the Collegium Phaenomenologicum in Citta di Castello, in Umbria, Italy, July 9-31. The conference included sessions about aesthetics and the phenomenology of experience. Rob taught art lessons to conference participants and studied the work of artist Alberto Burri who worked in Citta. Adams received funding from the LCC Faculty Professional Development.

Rob Adams Travels to Italy in July

Rob Adams, instructor of painting, drawing, and design in the Art Department, will be traveling to Italy this July. Rob received funding from LCC Faculty Professional Development and will use this funding to "travel to the Collegium Phaenomenologicum in Umbria, Italy this July 9-31. I'll be attending conference sessions about aesthetics, phenomenology of experience, and other topics important to contemporary art, with top scholars in the field. I also am offering art lessons to conference participants during free times, as an adjunct to our discussions. Additionally, I'll have the opportunity of studying the work of artist Alberto Burri, who worked in town. The Burri Foundation offers extensive museum collections and archives of the artist's life and work. I plan to make works informed by his colorist collage aesthetic, both to display at the conference hotel, and at my faculty show in the LCC Art Gallery during Fall term, 2010. I expect the trip will make me a more valuable asset to LCC, broadening the knowledge and experience I am

Arts & Business Alliance Partnership Award for 2010

Lane's Division of the Arts and the Eugene Airport/Gallery at the Airport Partnership are one of the finalists for the first Annual Arts and Business Partnership Award for 2010. The Arts & Business Alliance of Eugene gives the Award which recognizes those in the local arts and business sectors that are successfully collaborating to contribute to the quality of life in Eugene.

The 2010 Finalists are the Eugene Airport and the Gallery at the Airport Partnership, Kendall Subaru and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and Isler CPA and the John G. Shedd Institute for the Arts. All three finalists will be honored at the Alliance's BRAVA Breakfast (Business Recognizing Arts Vision and Achievement) on June 4, 2010 at the Hult Center.

The Eugene Airport/Gallery at the Airport Partnership: "When economic uncertainty and budget constraints threatened the survival of the Gallery at the Airport, an exhibit space on the second floor landing of the Eugene Airport, community members Randy Stender and Dottie Chase worked quickly to put together a consortium of local non-profit arts organizations to manage the gallery. Four local arts organizations, Lane Community College Division of the Arts, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA), and the Emerald Art Center, came together to form the Gallery at the Airport Partnership ensuring that the airport would have a permanent space for the exhibition of visual art and artifacts."

The LCC Faculty Art Exhibition is on display at the Airport Gallery during April, May and June.

Earth Day Installation at Kelly Middle School

A Challenge to Change: An Earth Day Installation was a project by 8th graders at Kelly Middle School. This was an Arts Work in Education Collaboration between Kristie Potwora, LCC Art Teaching Partner, and Ms. Mora's two 8th grade classes (65 student artists) and was on display between April 22-30.

The Earth Day Installation was designed to challenge the viewer, and the artists themselves, to make behavioral changes that will help to save our planet.

Potwora writes: "We contrasted non-biodegradable items from participating students and loaned from LCC’s Recycling Services, by “trashing” the inner courtyard at Kelly. Next, we created numerous silhouettes out of black paper of the animals that are affected by our ill use of the planet and pasted them on the windows looking onto the courtyard. This was to stress the point that if we are not more mindful, these animals will be extinct due to our personal and collective greed. Along the window panes we included the quote, "Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money." -- Cree Saying

Finally, we invited viewers to pledge to make a change to help save the earth.
Over 600 students, staff, and faculty made pledges to become more green!"

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present “Here and There”, a two-person show featuring artists and studio technicians, Mark Poole and Stacy Jo Scott. The show runs from May 3rd through May 20th. A lecture featuring both artists will be held on May 6th at 3:00 pm with a reception immediately following.

Mark Poole works in the sculpture studio and Stacy Jo Scott works in the ceramics studio within the Department of Art and Applied Design. The exhibition consists of both sculpture and ceramics, along with installation work.

When asked to describe his work, Mark explained, “ My works are environmental: creating spaces and connecting elements that encourage new interactions. The materials I work with impact my relationship with each sculpture.”

He further states, “The simple and organic shapes in my work invoke connections among the layers of the world we inhabit. These works recognize the potential for art to fill our need for intrigue, mystery, story, ritual, sensual experience and beauty.”

Mezzotint Workshop with Ryan O'Malley, May 15-16

The next printmaking workshop will be "Mezzotint" taught by Ryan O'Malley from Drive by Press. The workshop is on May 15-16 (Saturday and Sunday,) 9:00 am-4:00 pm in the LCC Printmaking Studio, Building 10/Room 200.

Mezzotint engraving is a drypoint intaglio process that emphasizes tone in order to create images rich in value and depth. For this two-day workshop students will learn the basics of mezzotint engraving in black and white. We will cover place preparation, rocking, scraping and burnishing, alternative techniques, tool care, inking, wiping, and printing. Students are expected to come prepared with necessary tools and imagery to translate from paper to metal.

Robert Adams - "Landscapes" at Goldworks in March

Robert Adams, LCC art instructor, is having a solo art show throughout March at Goldworks Jewelry Art Studio. The theme of the show is "Landscapes from the Vermont Studio Center," where Adams had a residency in the fall of 2009, assisted by travel funding from the Art department.

The opening reception will be Friday March 5th, 4:30 to 7:30 pm, and is a stop on on the First Friday Artwalk. Adams will be there to talk about the work, with Kate Ali, LCC sculpture instructor, who is leading the art walk. There will also be wine tasting by the Sineann Winery that evening.

Kristie Potwora - Chance to Flourish Exhibit at OSU

Kristie Potwora, silk screening instructor at Lane, will have her work shown in "Chance to Flourish: Private, Public, and Wild Gardens" an invitational show at the Giustina Art Gallery in the LaSells Stewart Center on the campus of Oregon State University. The show runs from March 1-30, with an Artists' Reception on March 17 at 6-8 pm.

The show is sponsored by the College of Agricultural Sciences. Thirty-five artists who are represented in the College’s Art About Agriculture permanent collection were invited to submit one recent work of art relevant to the garden theme of the show. The LCC Art Gallery is pleased to present "Spring Thaw" a two-person show featuring Lane faculty members Kate Ali and Kristie Potwora. The exhibit runs from February 1-18. An artists lecture will be given on February 11 at 3:30 p.m. with a reception following.

The exhibition includes sculpture, printmaking, and installation work. Kate Ali teaches sculpture. Ali says her sculpture focuses on “the interpersonal dynamics that shape the way we interact with the world and treat one another.” Kristie Potwora teaches printmaking. Potwora says, “Working with and learning about natural elements and how they relate to each other catapulted me into creating numerous sketches and imagery studies.”

Jody Dunphy, an artist and printmaker, will offer a Collagraph Printmaking Workshop on February 13-14 (Saturday and Sunday), 9:00 am - 4:00 pm in the LCC Printmaking Studio.

The workshop is open to all levels, beginning to advanced. In this workshop you will explore collagraph - a hybrid intaglio/relief process characterized by a rich, organic image quality. It is an exciting process suitable for beginners and for experienced printmakers. During this workshop, participants will experiment with the medium while creating a series of prints.

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present Bestiary, a collective body of work by San Francisco artist Cheryl Coon. The show runs from January 4 through 28. An artist lecture will be held on January 11 at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following.

The exhibition consists of artist books that draw their central ideas from primordial images, archetypes, ancient rituals and texts, folklore and mythology. Printmaking Alumni Exhibition & Reception

Celebrate Lane's printmaking alumni and their original works in LCC's art collection.

Lane Community College has installed 18 original prints by alumni from its printmaking program. The prints were collected by the Art and Applied Design Department for the college's permanent art collection.

This is a diverse and colorful collection that that showcases a variety of printmaking techniques, says art instructor Susan Lowdermilk. There is etching, woodcut, screen print, collagraph and monotypes. The artists all studied at Lane and have gone on to rich and diverse experiences. Many have bachelors and masters of fine art degrees from major universities and art schools and some have won sizable scholarships. Others are productive working artists and some are art teachers. The prints are now part of Lanes permanent art collection. We are proud of this collection and excited to share it with the public.

A reception for the artists and for arts appreciators will be held Thursday, December 3, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the exhibit, installed in the south-facing corridor of building 19 near the Workforce Center.

Jessica Burke - Cerebral Spaces - Opens Nov. 16

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present "Cerebral Spaces" a collective body of work by Salem artist Jessica Burke. The exhibition consists of paintings that reflect on the stream of consciousness chronicling the evolving definition of "acceptable" femininity within the spectrum of gender.

Burke states, "The images I create explore this conceptual construction through the environments that surround the figure. Theses environments represent a cerebral space that underscores the gender performance as the focal point of the work."

LEE IMONEN - ODOT BRIDGE ART PROJECT

Lane sculpture instructor Lee Imonen is among the artists chosen to help the Oregon Department of Transportation develop design enhancements for the Interstate 5 Willamette River Bridge replacement project. Lee is partnering with GreenWorks and artists Adam Kuby and Suzanne Lee to design a south bank interpretive area, which includes the old Eugene Millrace, river channel restoration, and the south bank bicycle and pedestrian path, underpass and viaduct. Conceptual plans will be developed this fall and winter, and unveiled during Eugene’s First Friday Gallery Walk on Feb. 5. The artist and design teams were selected by ODOT’s design enhancement panel for the I-5 Willamette River Bridge project.

The LCC Art Gallery is pleased to present "Whenever It Comes" a collective body of work by Portland artist Mark Perry. The show consists of work based in printmaking, including processes such as relief, intaglio and woodcut.

When asked to describe his work, Perry had this to say, Most of my imagery is non-representational with symbolic and recognizable elements involved. Most of my prints are one of a kind, and all of them are hand printed via a press. The main theme has been based on "fate."

The show runs from October 26 to November 12. There will be a reception on November 4 at 4:30 pm.

Susan Lowdermilk - Pop-up-Book in Florida Exhibit

Susan Lowdermilk has a pop-up-book in Scissors: Pop-Up, at the Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida. The exhibit showcases original pop-up and handmade books by artists from around the country and the world. The exhibit runs through the end of October.

A review in the St. Petersburg Times writes about Lowdermilk's book: Susan Lowdermilk created a woodcut print, then cut it as a three-dimensional tunnel to accompany William Stafford's lyrical poem "A Ritual to Read to Each Other."

Rob Adams Paints Ballet Backdrop

Rob Adams, instructor of basic design and drawing, has painted the backdrop for Visions d'Amour: 10 Ballets in Paris, a ballet at the Soreng Theater at the Hult Center of Performing Arts, October 9-10.

Ballet Fantastique's critically-acclaimed chamber company presents a dramatic taste of Paris in ten short ballets. It's a don't-miss "tour en Francais," from operatic drama to the flair of the Moulin Rouge cabaret.

Eugene composer Jeremy Schropp and his live orchestra join Ballet Fantastique on stage in a ballet of sophisticated French frivolity, "Night at the Cafe Terrace." Van Gogh's painting, as re-envisioned by Northwest artist Rob Adams, lights up this nighttime Paris scene.

Visions of love will carry you from hauntingly beautiful operatic stories by Jules Massanet, Gabriel Faure, and Georges Bizet, to the playful "Papillion" (with guest pianist John Jantzi), and back to rosy Parisian romances with the music of French chanteuses Edith Piaf and Carla Bruni.

LASA - Lane Art Student Association - 1st Meeting

The Lane Art Student Association (LASA) will hold its first meeting of the fall term on Monday, October 12, 6:00-7:00 pm, Building 11, Room 131.

To begin activities for this academic year, LASA has been granted a gallery space for student artwork in Building 16. LASA has made a proposal, based on the spring survey, stating what students would like to see in the upcoming renovation of the Art & Applied Design buildings.

Mildred Crow, LASA president, writes that "We need student participation and officers! Resources are available for projects and leadership positions are open for reelection. Please come to our first meeting and help plan our agenda for the year."

LASA meetings will be held every other Monday, same time, same place.

Kathleen Caprario - OSU Art Faculty Exhibit

Kathleen Caprario has a painting in the OSU Art Faculty Exhibit at the Fairbanks Gallery. The exhibit will run until October 7 when there will be a closing reception at 4:30-6:00 pm. Andy Salzman - Juror for Mayor's Art Show

Andy Salzman, ceramics and sculpture instructor, was a juror for the Mayor's Art Show, an all-comers juried exhibition of work by Lane County artists. The official mayor's show included about four dozen works chosen from 260 pieces. The opening ceremony and awards was held on Thursday, September 3. The show runs from September 3 through October 31. Rejects from the mayor's show were elgible for hanging in the Salon des Refuses.
