Cheryl Coon - Bestiary Exhibit - January 4-28

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present Bestiary, a collective body of work by San Francisco artist Cheryl Coon. The show runs from January 4 through 28. An artist lecture will be held on January 11 at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following.

The exhibition consists of artist books that draw their central ideas from primordial images, archetypes, ancient rituals and texts, folklore and mythology. Coon states, “I try to investigate the spiritual and the mysterious, patterns in nature versus chaos. So I try to create a space to contemplate the mysterious – everything from the sublimely beautiful to the ridiculously humorous.”

The gallery is located on the first floor of building 11 on main campus. There is no charge for admission. Hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays. Contact: Art and Applied Design, 463-5409.

Susan Lowdermilk - Pop-up-Book in Florida Exhibit

Susan Lowdermilk has a pop-up-book in Scissors: Pop-Up, at the Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida. The exhibit showcases original pop-up and handmade books by artists from around the country and the world. The exhibit runs through the end of October.

A review in the St. Petersburg Times writes about Lowdermilk's book: Susan Lowdermilk created a woodcut print, then cut it as a three-dimensional tunnel to accompany William Stafford's lyrical poem "A Ritual to Read to Each Other."

Susan Lowdermilk - The Beautiful Book

Susan Lowdermilk's artist book A Ritual to Read to Each Other is included in The Beautiful Book: Exploring the Allure of Artist Books, an exhibit at the 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, Oregon, June 5-27.

The 23 Sandy Gallery writes, "Artist books are small edition or one of a kind book forms hand-crafted by individual artists. This exquisite collection showcases the beauty in craftsmanship, materials, and imagery of the bookmaker’s art."

A Ritual to Read: Tunnel Book is a tunnel book with a three panel wrap around cover. 12 x 15 inches. “A Ritual to Read to Each Other" is a poem by William Stafford.

Artist Book & Pop-up Basics Workshop

Susan Lowdermilk, book artist and printmaker will present an "Artist Book and Pop-Up Basics" workshop at the Eugene Textile Center. The workshop will be held on Saturday, February 21, 
10 am to 4 pm.

The workshop will include a presentation of artist books from Susan’s collection. Students will create a variety of basic folded and stitched book structures and pop-ups. The goal is to learn beginning skills and binding styles, enough to charge your imagination to start creating your own books.

An artist book differs from a typical book in that the book is not merely a container for art, but is designed, conceived and created by the artist as an art form in itself. The viewer is encouraged to touch, explore and take a journey as they experience an artist book. Artist books often use text and/or images. However some artists’ books are solely conceptual. As a book artist, you are your own author, artist/illustrator, typographer, printer and binder.

Artist Books by Susan Lowdermilk - 23 Sandy Gallery, July 2 - August 3

23 Sandy Gallery is pleased to present artist books by Eugene artist Susan Lowdermilk. An art instructor at Lane Community College, Susan is both a print maker and a book artist working primarily in relief media such as woodcut and wood engraving. Her artist books utilize abstract marks and objects as visual metaphors or allegories to explore tenuous qualities of human interaction, struggles and experience. Her artist books appear in many public collections including the Getty Museum, the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library.

There will be a reception for Susan on First Thursday, July 3, 2008, 6:00-9:00 p.m. The show will run July 3-August 2, 2008. Gallery hours are Thursday- Saturday, Noon to 6:00 p.m.

Minnesota Center for Book Arts Exhibition - Oct 22 - Nov. 15

The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present the Minnesota Center for Book Arts Exhibition This exhibition is a unique collection of works from book artists that reside in the great state of Minnesota. This is the second half of an exhibition exchange that began last year with MCBA hosting book artists from Oregon. The show runs from October 22nd through November 15th.

A lecture will be held on Monday, October 22nd, from 3:00 – 4:00p.m. with a reception immediately following. The reception is free and open to the public. The gallery is located in Building 11 on the main campus of LCC, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. There is no charge for admission.

Susan Lowdermilk (see her "O/X " book at right), Marilyn Robert (see her books at right), and Stacy Jo Scott are showing works in the exhibit: Betsy Priddy and Friends show at the Cannon Beach Gallery at 1064 S. Hemlock in Cannon Beach, Oregon, October 4-29. They will be showing their work along with other artists in this group show.
