Susan Lowdermilk at CODEX 2013

Susan Lowdermilk, instructor of book arts and printmaking, had a booth at the Codex International Book Fair 2013 in San Francisco.  Held on February 10-13, over 182 of the world’s most distinguished book artists and artisans, private presses, and fine art publishers exhibited their art and craft.

Creativity Vending Machine - "Art-o-Mat"

An article titled "Creativity -Vending Machine" about LCC's Art-o-Mat appeared in the September 7 issue of the Eugene Register-Guard. Written by Joel Gorthy with photographs by Collin Andrew, the article begins "Art-o-Mats, made from revamped vintage cigarette machines, dispense little doses of original art for just $5.  Oregon's first one remains at LCC."  Susan Lowdermilk brought the vending machine to Lane after seeing one on a trip to the East Coast.  LCC has hosted the Art-o-Mat since 2005; it is located next to the art gallery and Art Department office in Building 11 on Lane's main campus.  Check out the complete article at:

Mayor's Art Show

Too Much Information appeared in the September 6th issue of Eugene Register-Guard. Written by Bob Keefer, the newspaper's arts reporter, the article reviews the current Mayor's Art Show at the Jacobs Gallery.  Works of art by several LCC Art and Applied Arts faculty are in the show:  Jeff Goolsby, Dan Schmitt, Jan Halvorsen, Susan Lowdermilk, Talmadge Doyle and student Eve Takahashi.  Keefer wrote about the deep appeal of Jeff Goolsby's "Conflict Management" and about Eve Takahashi's photograph of former student Carter.  Susan Lowdermilk and Talmadge Doyle's artist book "Aviary" is "wonderful for its sheer, drop-dead gorgeous etching and perfect craftsmanship."   The complete article is available at the Register-Guard's website:  http://www.registerguard.com/web/entertainmentarts/28693088-57/art-mayor-artist-painting-statements.html.csp.

Mayor's Art Show, Aug. 23-Oct. 6

Works by LCC Art and Media Arts faculty have been selected for the 2012 Mayor's Art Show at the Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center in Eugene.  The show celebrates Lane County artists.  Faculty members Tallmadge Doyle, Susan Lowdermilk, and Dan Schmitt, as well as former student Eve Takahashi are from the Art Department; Jan Halvorsen and Jefferson Goolsby are from the Media Arts Department.

The Awards Presentation and Opening Reception is on August 23 from 5:30 pm. The community will be able to vote for their choice during the Eugene Celebration, August 24-26, with the Viewer's Choice Award to be presented at the First Friday ArtWalk on September 7.

The Jacobs Gallery is in the lower level of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts located between 6th and 7th Avenues and Olive and Willamette Streets in downtown Eugene.  Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 12-4 pm, Saturday 11 am - 3 pm, and one hour prior to and during all Hult Center performances.

Rearrangement: Art & Text, April 1-23

The Oregon Arts Alliance current exhibit, Rearrangement: Art & Text: examining the aesthetics of fonts, letters, and words in contemporary art runs from April 1-23, 2011.  The exhibit opening is part of the First Friday Art Walk, April 1, 5:30-8:00 pm.  Susan Lowdermilk, instructor of graphic design, book arts, printmaking, and typography in the Art & Applied Design Department and Claire Dannenbaum, reference librarian at LCC, have work in this exhibit.

Artist Books and Pop-up, a Sampler -- Susan Lowdermilk Workshop at OCAC

Susan Lowdermilk is presenting a 2-day workshop:  Artist Books and Pop-up, a Sampler at the Oregon College of Art and Craft on March 5-6, (Sat, Sun) 9:00 am--4:00 pm.

In this workshop, you will learn a variety of pop-up techniques and folded and stitched book structures. Form, materials and content, and how the three are essentially integrated will be discussed throughout the workshop, as well design, layout and problem solving strategies. Examples of artist books from the instructor’s collection will be presented and discussed. All skill levels are welcome, beginning to advanced. Tuition received on or before 2/16, $230. Tuition received after 2/16, $250. Studio fee $20.

Artist Books and Pop-Up Class

New class for Winter term!  Artist Books and Pop-up, will be offered in the Winter term by Susan Lowdermilk.  Learn to design and construct a variety of basic folded and stitched book structures and learn pop-up techniques in this Winter term course. The curriculum focuses on design process development, conceptual development and typographic layout. You will also learn the history of the book form throughout the world, movable books, and artist's books.

Wild Autumn Magic - Andie Thrams Workshop

Wild Autumn Magic: Surface Design & Accordion Books Workshop with Andie Thrams, November 6-7, 10:00am - 5:00pm, LCC Building 11, Room 119. 

Explore the elusive creative space between care and wild abandon as a way to invite the magic of fall into the making of a book. The workshop will begin by working with pure color to create beautiful shimmering paper surfaces.Wild flora will be used for inspiration and as tools for drawing and painting in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Once dry, our paper will have a surface wonderfully primed for building additional layers of drawing, painting and writing. Directed experiments will dance between the careful and the out of control, using watercolor, ink, gouache, pencil and pastel to develop imagery and content. Finally, all will come together as the work is bound into accordion-folded structures, full of autumn magic. Color mixing understanding is helpful, though not required.  All levels welcome, beginning to advanced.

Andie Thrams is a California-based visual artist working in painting andt he book arts. Her lifelong devotion to creative work in wilderness locations,especially within the pages of her field journals, has evolved into the artist’sbooks and paintings now held in prominent private and public collections.

Printmaking/Silkscreen Studios Open House, October 6

The Printmaking and Silkscreen Studios in the Art and Applied Design Department have a temporary location during this year's remodel of their former space. Please come to our opening reception on Wednesday, October 6 from 3:00-4:00. Inclusion and Distillation: Black and White is at the Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center and features works by printmaker Susan Lowdermilk, fiber artist Marilyn Robert, and painter Satoko Motouji. "...Art-o-Mat was created by a group called Artists in Cellophane. An Art-o-Mat is an old retired cigarette dispenser that has been turned into an art dispenser. Artists from all over the world can submit their art to be sold in the machines at $5 a piece. Cool idea, right? ...we found one in Eugene, at Lane Community College, in their Art gallery. ... Mom and I were totally excited and ... Monday afternoon, we pulled into the college, and went searching for the Art-o-Mat. ..." Check out her blog for the rest of the story.

Mezzotint Workshop with Ryan O'Malley, May 15-16

The next printmaking workshop will be "Mezzotint" taught by Ryan O'Malley from Drive by Press. The workshop is on May 15-16 (Saturday and Sunday,) 9:00 am-4:00 pm in the LCC Printmaking Studio, Building 10/Room 200.

Mezzotint engraving is a drypoint intaglio process that emphasizes tone in order to create images rich in value and depth. For this two-day workshop students will learn the basics of mezzotint engraving in black and white. We will cover place preparation, rocking, scraping and burnishing, alternative techniques, tool care, inking, wiping, and printing. Students are expected to come prepared with necessary tools and imagery to translate from paper to metal.

Susan Lowdermilk has work in the March Print Exhibition at the Augen Gallery in Portland. The show runs from March 3 to 27. Small Works - Group Show - Nov. 27 - Jan. 3

Susan Lowdermilk, instructor in Graphic Design and Studio Arts has work in Small Works: A Group Show at Vistra Framing and Gallery, November 27 to January 3. The show presents "wonderful whimsical delightful affordable collectable petite art works" by twenty-one artists in a variety of media. An opening reception and Friday Art Walk will be on December 4, 5:30 - 8:30 pm. Ten percent of the proceeds from this show will benefit The Relief Nursery.

Susan Lowdermilk - Pop-up-Book in Florida Exhibit

Susan Lowdermilk has a pop-up-book in Scissors: Pop-Up, at the Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida. The exhibit showcases original pop-up and handmade books by artists from around the country and the world. The exhibit runs through the end of October.

A review in the St. Petersburg Times writes about Lowdermilk's book: Susan Lowdermilk created a woodcut print, then cut it as a three-dimensional tunnel to accompany William Stafford's lyrical poem "A Ritual to Read to Each Other."

Susan Lowdermilk - The Beautiful Book

Susan Lowdermilk's artist book A Ritual to Read to Each Other is included in The Beautiful Book: Exploring the Allure of Artist Books, an exhibit at the 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, Oregon, June 5-27.

The 23 Sandy Gallery writes, "Artist books are small edition or one of a kind book forms hand-crafted by individual artists. This exquisite collection showcases the beauty in craftsmanship, materials, and imagery of the bookmaker’s art."

A Ritual to Read: Tunnel Book is a tunnel book with a three panel wrap around cover. 12 x 15 inches. “A Ritual to Read to Each Other" is a poem by William Stafford.

Drive By Press at Lane, April 27-28

Drive by Press, a mobile printmaking studio, will offer a printmaking workshop at Lane on April 27-28, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Their van will be on the east side of the cafeteria next to Building 11. There will be a public lecture in the Performance Hall on Tuesday, April 28, 3:00-5:00 pm.

Operating from the back of a van, Drive By Press travels around the country conducting workshops, delivering lectures, and demonstrating printing techniques including woodcut, etching, lithography, serigraphy, and collograph. Copper Engraving - Printmaking Workshop - May 9-10

Printmaker John Salang will present a Copper Engraving Printmaking Workshop, May 9-10, in the LCC Printmaking Studio.

John Saling began studying printmaking in 1964 and has focused on engravings for the last 30 years. John’s work reflects his dramatic and structural use of line. Textures spring from direct work on the plate. "Each edition that I produce reflects a chosen engraving method, a type and combination of lines, and a specific size, all part of the considered vocabulary for a particular image." He is a graduate of Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle, WA., and has attended The Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit, MI., and Pratt Graphic Art Center in New York City.

In this workshop John will demonstrate engraving, show original prints in a number of styles, and present a condensed history of the technique. We will review the use of engraving tools. Burins will be sized to individual users and sharpened in preparation to engrave on copper plates. This class will prepare students to create and develop their own engravings. During the workshop, students will design, create and print their own engraving from a copper plate.

The workshop will be held on May 9-10, 9:00 am -4:00 pm, in the Printmaking Studio, Building 10, Room 200 on the LCC main campus, 4000 East 30th Avenue, Eugene, OR 97405. The cost is $60 for LCC students and staff, $90 for community members, with a $30 materials fee.

Scholarships are available sponsored by the Canaga-Lawrence Scholarship.

Collagraph Printmaking with Jody Dunphy, Feb. 7-8

A Collagraph Printmaking Workshop with Jody Dunphy was held on February 7-8 in the LCC Printmaking Studio. An intensely rich, organic image quality and immediacy in working with the plate are the defining characteristic of this intaglio process. Collagraph is extremely versatile, allowing for the incorporation of found objects, drawing, painting, and/or relief.

Jody Dunphy is an artist and printmaker specializing in collagraph and combined printmaking processes. Her choice of materials and mode or working yields intensely layered, organic, reverent works of art. Jody creates her prints on a vintage, hand-made press in her home-studio in Eugene. Artist Book & Pop-up Basics Workshop

Susan Lowdermilk, book artist and printmaker will present an "Artist Book and Pop-Up Basics" workshop at the Eugene Textile Center. The workshop will be held on Saturday, February 21, 
10 am to 4 pm.

The workshop will include a presentation of artist books from Susan’s collection. Students will create a variety of basic folded and stitched book structures and pop-ups. The goal is to learn beginning skills and binding styles, enough to charge your imagination to start creating your own books.

An artist book differs from a typical book in that the book is not merely a container for art, but is designed, conceived and created by the artist as an art form in itself. The viewer is encouraged to touch, explore and take a journey as they experience an artist book. Artist books often use text and/or images. However some artists’ books are solely conceptual. As a book artist, you are your own author, artist/illustrator, typographer, printer and binder.
