Bike Corrals Designed by Lane Students

Eugene area bike riders will be able to experience a little art when they park their bikes at two downtown locations. The City of Eugene partnered with Lane art instructor Lee Imonen and his students over the past year to design and create three artistic bike corrals for downtown. Two of the corrals were dedicated with their first bike locking on Thursday, September 8.

Mayor Kitty Piercy gave an address in front of the Morning Glory Restaurant across from the train station at 450 Willamette Street. A bicycle group then traveled over to the Kiva grocery store at 11th and Olive to dedicate the second piece.

“The work is fabulous and the students deserve a round of applause for their efforts,” says Imonen.

Students in last fall’s Art 117: Three Dimensional Basic Design came up with nine different designs for the downtown bike corrals. The public reviewed and commented on the designs while they were on display in the Atrium and the Eugene Public Library during January and February. A selection committee composed of the City’s Public Art Committee, Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and other stakeholders reviewed public input and determined the winning designs.

The project was funded by the city and in-kind donations including the design work and thousands of hours of labor from Imonen and his students.

Cultural Landscapes Mural Project

The Art on Campus committee announces that Lane Community College will be receiving some color on campus this summer in a big way. A mural designed by artist and Lane instructor, Tom Madison, will be painted on Building 5 by students under the instruction of Mr. Madison. The mural is being executed as an art class, beginning August 15. The design celebrates the diverse cultural landscape of the college, the United States, and the world at large, in an abstract and symbolic way.

The mural was approved through the college's established art review process with funding for materials provided primarily through the President's fund and The Lane Foundation. Art Department - New Summer Location

The Art and Applied Design Department has moved to new quarters for the summer while it's home in Building 11 is undergoing renovation.  The department offices are now in the Music, Dance, and Theatre Department in Building 6.  The division coordinator, Mary Jo Kreindel, is now in building 6/133, 8:00 am-4:00pm, 541-463-5411 and the department assistant, Elizabeth Uhlig, is now in building 6/143, 1:00-5:00 pm at 541-463-5409.  The offices are open Monday - Thursday.  LCC is closed on Fridays during the summer.

Satoko in "Landscapes by Gallery Artists" at White Lotus, June 3 - July 30

White Lotus Gallery is pleased to announce a special open house event for jewelry artists Suzanne Linquist and Christine L. Sundt and ceramicist Hank Murrow. It will be held at the gallery on Friday, June 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will showcase new works by the artists.

Also on June 3, an exhibit of Landscapes by Gallery Artists will open and feature works by Northwest and Asian artists such as Jon Jay Cruson, Satoko Motouji, Connie Mueller, Gary Tepfer, Maurice Van, Her Xuesheng, and Li Yanpeng. Showcased media range from acrylic, watercolor, and oil paintings to photography and woodcut and linocut prints. The exhibit will be on display through July 30.

Rob Adams in "Equine: A juried group exhibition", June 1 - July 16

Rob Adams, instructor in Art & Applied Design, has a collage piece in the "Equine: A juried group exhibition" at  Portlands' Froelick Gallery. The title of Rob's piece is "Horse with Mask". This group show runs from June 1 to July 16. There are two "First Thursday" opening receptions on June 2, 5-8 pm, and July 7, 5-8 pm. The show includes work from a number of artists, including Christopher Rauschenberg and Rick Bartow.
